Reconnecting After Years of Drift

When nothing is wrong, and nothing is close either.

Drift does not announce itself. There was no betrayal, no fight worth remembering. You just became efficient roommates who share logistics and a mortgage.

Why drift is hard to address

Grievances give you something to work on. Drift gives you nothing to point at, so both people conclude this must simply be what long relationships become.

It is not. It is what unattended long relationships become.

Three moves that reverse it

Ask a question you do not already know the answer to. Not logistics. "What are you looking forward to right now?"

Introduce novelty that is genuinely novel. Shared new experience, not a nicer version of your usual Friday.

Reintroduce curiosity about their inner life. You know their schedule. Do you know what they are currently worried about?

Expect it to feel artificial

Rebuilding closeness on purpose feels staged for a while. Everyone reports this. Do it anyway; the awkwardness is a phase, not a verdict.
